Lady Tigers beat Wright in Big Horn thriller, 50-49

Jan 7, 2018 By Scott Akanewich, Sports Editor

Avery Cox came to play against the Lady Panthers of Wright on Saturday, as the physical 5-foot-8 senior forward poured in 16 points points in Lander's dramatic 50-49 victory.

Cox hit a pair of buckets in the opening quarter, but then really heated up in the second, adding seven more points as the Lady Tigers trailed only 28-26 at the half.

Wright's Shelby Apodaca kept pace with her counterpart Cox, posting a game-high 17 points, so it fell to the second-leading scorers for their respective squads to decide the game.

Which was where Conner LeBeau came in.

After scoring a career-high 31 points against in a 64-44 home victory over Torrington on Dec. 12, the powerful redhead once again came through in the clutch, scoring 13 points on the game, including a perfect 3-of-3 from the line.

Lander outscored the Lady Panthers 24-21 in a tightly-contested second half, as LeBeau was a perfect 3-of-3 from both the field and the free-throw line, helping put the game away.

Shoshoni 45, Lander 38

In Friday's opener, Lander faced Fremont County neighbors Lady Blue of Shoshoni and came away with a 45-38 defeat.

Cox again led Lander with 11, while LeBeau added eight, but it wasn't enough against Shoshoni, who was led by Gheniece Medicine Cloud's 13 points and another 11 from Brianna Thompson.

Lady Blue led 12-8 after one and 23-16 at the break and Lander was outscored by a 22-20 margin in the second half.

Lander 49 (OT)

In Saturday's finale, the Lady Tigers fought valiantly, only to fall 50-49 in overtime to Lovell.

Rhoni Ferris came alive with 14 points in the contest, including all four of Lander's points in the extra period, while St. Clair had nine, as LeBeau and Jade Ware each added seven.
