River Rats open home season with OutlawsJan 4, 2018 By Scott Akanewich, Sports Editor
On Saturday, Fremont County's only high-school hockey squad will hit its home ice as the Riverton River Rats will welcome Laramie for a contests at 8:30 p.m., followed by a matinee on Sunday afternoon at 12:30 p.m.
So far this season, it's been a rough go for the home side, as they've failed to win any of the its first eight games.
Defense has been the primary culprit, as Riverton has allowed an astounding 69 goals, letting in an average of 8.6 per game.
Conversely, it hasn't been much better at the other end of the rink, as the River Rats have only managed to hit opposition nets 15 times, average of 1.8.
Add those two ingredients and victories are difficult to come by.
However, all the previous results were away from the Riverton Ice Arena, as the playing surface has only recently become usable as the sub-freezing weather has finally set in on the barn on the outskirts of town in time for the new year.
Sam Shepardson currently leads the club with four goals, two assists and six points, while Price Milward (3) and Niklas Forkl (2) are the only other Riverton players to have scored more than one goal, although eight other skaters have registered at least a point.
Devon Harper and Carsten Werbelow have found themselves constantly staring down the barrels of opposing shooters, as Riverton's defense is allowing an average of 58 shots per game, while only generating 20 themselves at the offensive end.
The weekend games begins a run of 10 consecutive home contests, which comprises the entire home schedule for the club.
