Big Red splashers hit water in LaramieJan 3, 2018 By Scott Akanewich, Sports Editor
On Friday and Saturday, Riverton headed for the rarified air of Laramie to hit the water for two days of aquatic competition and the results came off swimmingly, as Big Red finished the weekend ranked third among all Class 3-A squads.
The Plainsmen hosted a pre-invite on Friday, followed by the invitational on Saturday, which featured a full field of Class 4-A powers, as well as 21-time defending Class 3-A state champions Lander.
Mathew Fisher was Riverton's highest placer, with a ninth in the 500-yard freestyle on Friday in a time of 5:53.07, which was fast enough to qualify for the state meet.
In fact, nine turned out to be a lucky number for Fisher, as he teamed up with Michael Kraft, Ashton Settlemire and Nate Shroyer for a ninth-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 3:55.21.
Settlemire finished 14th in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:26.63, along with a 12th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:09.48).
On to Saturday, which featured girls as well as boys races, which meant Lady Wolverine state champion Josie Dike was afforded the opportunity to flash the form which helped her capture glory in November at the state championships in Gillette.
Dike finished third in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.56 and followed that up with another runner-up effort in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 57.67.
However, back to the boys, where Shroyer was the highest-ranked Wolverine on the day, with an eighth-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:11.17.
Fisher finished 18th in both the 200-yard freestyle (2:06.09) and 100-yard butterfly (1:07.55).
Riverton will next compete in Cody on Friday and Powell on Saturday.
