Still a month away from their first home games of the season, the Riverton High School boys and girls basketball teams play this week in the Cheyenne Invitational.
First up are the 1-6 RHS girls, who take on Cheyenne South at 12:30 p.m. Thursday.
The Bison girls are 2-4 coming in, having lost 43-40 to Buffalo in their most recent game Dec. 30.
Riverton travels across town on Friday to play at Cheyenne East High School against a team from Fort Collins, Colorado. The Colorado city has several high schools and the schedule does't make clear which one is coming to Cheyenne.
The Wolverines will bus to Laramie for Saturday's mid-day game against the Lady Plainsmen. Laramie's girls are 2-5. They also lost to Kelly Walsh early in the year, falling 60-52. Another common opponent, Evanston, beat Laramie 62-58 in the season opener. RHS lost 53-27 on Dec. 9 at the Casper Invitational.
Riding a four-game win streak, the Riverton boys play the same three teams at the Cheyenne tourney. Thursday afternoon's game against South, which carries a 3-3 record into the event. There are no common opponents to date and the Bison have played just one Wyoming team, losing 49-48 to Laramie last week.
RHS also plays the Fort Collins team on Friday, that game played Friday afternoon at East High School in Cheyenne.
One of the marquee matchups of the pre-conference season comes Saturday afternoon in Laramie, when Riverton, ranked second in Class 3-A polling, meets Laramie, No. 1 in the Class 4-A ranks. The Plainsmen are 5-1, including a 64-52 in over Evanston which vanquished the Wolverines at the Casper Invite. Laramie's only loss is to Rock Springs, an 89-79 shootout on Dec. 8.
The three-day schedule brings the pre-conference tournament season to an end for the Wolverines, who play Jan. 12 in Worland. Riverton doesn't have a home game until facing Lander on Feb. 2.
