Tall, talented Rocky Mountain outguns Cougar boys, 83-60

Dec 26, 2017 By Randy Tucker, Staff Writer

Rocky Mountain jumped on the Wind River Cougar boys early and never let up Friday in an 83-60 win in Cowley.

The final game of the pre-Christmas portion of the season was much anticipated, particularly by the Grizzly fans, who stormed the floor after the game.

Rocky Mountain has been building this team for the last three years, and first year head coach Pat Winland found the right combination in six seniors and his 6-foot-4 freshman son, Taylor. With only one player in the top seven under 6-2, the Grizzlies are a hard team to match up with.

Wind River discovered that early in the game.

The Grizzlies blew to a double-digit lead early in the second period. For WRHS, only 6-4 senior Jayin Trumbull was able to score consistently against the swarming Rocky defense. Trumbull finished with 27, nearly half of the Cougars' combined point total.

The 47 points the Grizzlies put on the first-half scoreboard are the most suffered by a Wind River team since the 2003 season against Lander in the old Fremont County Shootout.

Playing even was all that Wind River could muster in the second half.

The loss was the first against Class 2-A competition this season for Wind River, the defending Class 2-A state champion.

Rocky Mountain had four players in double figures, paced by 22 from Colby Davison, including five 3-pointers. Ethan Price scored 17 with Lathan May and Jonathan Allred each pouring in 14.

The Cougars return to action at the Big Horn Basin tournament in Worland and Thermopolis after the New Year. They don't play their first home game until six weeks from now when they entertain Shoshoni in February.
