Officials are investigating the death of a 60-year-old Riverton man who was found deceased early Saturday in his cell at the Fremont County Detention Center in Lander.

As the man was in custody of the Fremont County Sheriff's Office, the Lander Police Department will conduct the operation in cooperation with the Fremont County Coroner's Office.

"It's always nice to have an outside an agency (investigate) when you have something internal," LPD public information officer Duane Kaiser said.

Neither the LPD nor the FCCO indicated there was anything suspicious about the death. Regardless, Coroner Mark Stratmoen said an autopsy was scheduled to take place Tuesday.

"Since it was an in-custody death we always do an autopsy," Stratmoen said, though he also said the death "does appear to be natural."

Kaiser said his agency conducted an initial investigation at the scene, and nothing suspicious was found.

He noted that officers handle such situations with the 'worst-case scenario" in mind.

"That way you have your bases covered in case something comes up after autopsy that doesn't compute," he said.

The FCSO said the man had been incarcerated since Dec. 14.
