Lady Tigers light up Torrington, 62-49

Dec 17, 2017 By Scott Akanewich, Sports Editor

Conner LeBeau has played a lot of basketball during her time as a Lady Tiger.

However, on Friday night at Bob Carey Memorial Fieldhouse in the first home game of her senior season, the powerful 5-foot-6 forward lit up the Torrington defense for a career-high 31 points in a 62-49 Lander victory.

LeBeau began the game on fire, scoring 10 of the Lady Tigers' 12 first-quarter points, with only a Gabby St. Clair bucket interrupting her own personal offensive run.

However, the Lady Blazers weren't quite ready to succumb to the Lander onslaught without a fight.

Torrington went on a 5-0 run to open the second quarter and closed to within a single basket at 19-17, before the Lady Tigers managed to restore order for a 28-22 halftime lead.

According to Lander head coach Jeremy Francom, his club let up a bit at the outset of the second period, but did well in regaining its composure before the visitors could wrest control of the game.

"I think we got a little bit tired there," said Francom. "Luckily, we were able to refocus."

Indeed, they did, but the Lady Blazers were right with them step-for-step, basket-for-basket throughout the third quarter.

Rhoni Ferris had an inspired effort for the Lady Tigers, with all 10 of her points coming in the third period, including a coast-to-coast drive for an easy layup and a bucket off a nifty dish from St. Clair, who spun in the lane before laying off to a cutting Ferris for the score.

Lander led 47-39 after three and proceeded to put the hammer down in the fourth.

During one sequence, Avery Cox blocked a shot at the defensive end, which began a break the other way, ending with LeBeau sprawled on the floor after taking contact on the way to the hoop and drawing a foul.

After 19 points in the first half, LeBeau cooled off a bit in the third, with only three, but came back strong in the final eight minutes with another nine points to help seal the deal for the home side.

LeBeau's previous game high was a 25-point effort during her sophomore season, but was happy her massive performance came in a victory, she said.

"It's great just to get a win," said LeBeau. "What I'll remember most is how we played as a team."

Lander 46,

Wheatland 30

The Lady Tigers were able to carry over the positive momentum gained from Friday's win into Saturday with a 46-30 victory over Wheatland.

"It was definitely a carry-ver from the previous day," said Francom. "Once the girls gained a little confidence, they began to play loose and with a lead."

LeBeau and Jade Ware each had 10 points to lead Lander, while Ferris added nine.

The Lady Tigers led 23-13 at the half and never looked back.

Lander 55,

Thermopolis 43

In Saturday's late game, Lander prevailed against Thermopolis by a final of 55-43 in a game which saw Cox lead the Lady Tigers 14 points, with LeBeau adding 11 to close out a three-game sweep of the tournament, as nine different players scored.

The Lady Tigers led 24-15 at the break before cruising to the win.

Francom once again references Friday's success in the aftermath.

"Even when Thermopolis made its run, we were able to hold them off," he said. "Also, we spread the offense around and played unselfish team basketball."

Lander (3-3) will resume the season on Jan. 13 when they host Rawlins.
