Loop Road closing for the winter

Nov 24, 2015 From staff reports

The Loop Road above Lander will be closed for the winter Tuesday due to a forecasted storm this week.

The National Weather Service predicts a major winter storm will impact central Wyoming on Wednesday through the Thanksgiving holiday. The system will bring "sharply colder conditions" to the area, along with moderate to potentially heavy snow and periods of strong wind that will cause blowing and drifting snow, according to the NWS.

Wind chills are expected to be "well below zero" by late Wednesday night.

To ensure public safety, the Shoshone National Forest will close the entire length of Loop Road, also known as Forest Road 300 or Louis Lake Road, from Bruce's Campground to South Pass.

The road is located in the Washakie Ranger District of the Shoshone National Forest.

Once it is closed for the season, the Loop Road often remains inaccessible into April or May.

It connects the Sinks Canyon State Park area through the mountainous forest to U.S. Highway 28 near South Pass.

For further information about the closure, call 332-5460.
