Yurts a new way to camp in Sinks Canyon

Dec 7, 2014 From staff reports

Reservations for year-round use began Monday.

Sinks Canyon State Park is now the home of three "yurts," soft-sided cabins that became available to rent Monday.

The newly completed structures are in Popo Agie Campground, and can be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis.

"We think people are really going to enjoy this opportunity to stay in Sinks Canyon in a whole new way," said Darrel Trembly, superintendent of the park. "For people wanting to ski or snowshoe in the winter and stay the night, the yurts are perfect."

Three yurts are available for rent and are identified as the "sage" yurt, located next to the nature trail parking lot; the "river" yurt, located along the Popo Agie River by the suspension bridge; and the "accessible" yurt, located in the central area of the campground close to a universally accessible restroom.

Each yurt is equipped with a bunk bed with a full-size mattress on the bottom and a twin-size mattress on the top, and a futon which folds out into another full-sized bed. A small table with chairs, ceiling fan, built-in space heater and electrical outlet with USB charging ports also are provided in each unit. Visitors must provide their own sheets and bedding.

Cleaning supplies will be provided. No cooking is allowed in the yurt, but there is a fire grill and table located next to each structure.

The charge per night is $40 with a $50 cleaning and damage deposit. Campers also will be responsible for the nightly camping fee, which is $6 for Wyoming residents and $11 for non-residents.

The deposit will be returned upon inspection by site staff.

Winter reservations can be made through May 14 at the Sinks Canyon State Park office. After that date, reservations can be made through Sept. 15 with the state parks statewide reservation system. Off season reservations will be made through the park office beginning Sept. 16.

Built by the state parks central construction crew and the Sinks Canyon staff, the yurts are similar to yurts at Curt Gowdy State park near Cheyenne.
